BDS Broken Down Further

Background of BDS

The origins of the "boycott, divestment, and sanctions" movement trace back to anti-Israel activism during the early stages of the second Palestinian Intifada in 2000 and discussions at the 2001 U.N. Durban Conference Against Racism. In July 2004, The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) issued a statement, followed by a similar one from Palestinian civil society organizations in July 2005. These statements urged the international community to adopt comprehensive boycotts and divestment measures against Israel, drawing parallels with the actions taken against South Africa during apartheid. They also called for governments to impose embargoes and sanctions on Israel.

Why is BDS Antisemitic?

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement on college campuses frequently employs inflammatory and misleading language—such as "apartheid," "genocide," and "settler colonialism"—to delegitimize Israel and those who support its existence. While framed as a political campaign, BDS often promotes antisemitic narratives by invoking tropes of Jewish control, dual loyalty, and collective blame. Some BDS supporters explicitly oppose Israel’s right to exist or endorse violence against Israelis. Others pressure Jewish students to denounce Israel or exclude them from campus activism unless they disavow their connection to the Jewish state. This creates a hostile environment that marginalizes Jewish identity under the guise of political advocacy, turning BDS into a vehicle for modern antisemitism.BDS initiatives often exacerbate tensions, particularly on college campuses in the U.S., leading to the marginalization and intimidation of Jewish individuals and supporters of Israel. By targeting Israel and its advocates, BDS efforts may foster an environment conducive to antisemitic behavior and rhetoric.
