The Yellow Ribbon

On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists infiltrated southern Israel, targeting kibbutzim (communal villages), peace festivals, and IDF bases. The result of these attacks was horrific: over 1,200 people were killed, more than 200 taken hostage, and thousands injured. In solidarity with the hostages, the yellow ribbon emerged as a symbol of freedom and awareness.

The Watermelon

Following the events of October 7, the pro-Palestinian movement adopted the watermelon as a symbol of resistance, due to its colors matching those of the Palestinian flag–red, white, green, and black. Today, watermelon emojis and symbols appear in many places, often used by individuals unaware of their deeper meaning. At its core, the symbol has become associated with hate, persecution, and support for the terrorist actions of Hamas.
